Malcolm McEwen
Woodworker
Malcolm McEwen is a lifelong woodworker whose craftsmanship reflects his deep Oregon roots and passion for working with natural materials.
A third-generation Oregonian of Scotch-Irish descent, Malcolm grew up in Eugene and graduated from South Eugene High School in 1958. He went on to earn a master’s degree from the University of Oregon and spent 20 years as a teacher before transitioning into home construction, where he built houses throughout Eugene, Creswell, Springfield, and Lincoln City.
Malcolm’s journey into woodworking began in 1964 when he married an artist and started making frames and stretching canvases for her paintings. What began as a practical endeavor quickly grew into a lifelong passion. As his children reached junior high, he encouraged them to develop their own woodworking skills, creating and selling animal-shaped cutting boards.
Now, at 84 years old, Malcolm continues to spend countless hours in his workshop, crafting furniture, cabinetry, picture frames, wooden boxes, birdhouses, and custom cutting boards under the name “McFarm Boards.” His skill extends to detailed finishing work and molding, always refining each piece to perfection.
For Malcolm, woodworking is more than a craft—it is a creative expression and a connection to the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Whether sanding, shaping, or assembling, he finds joy in every step of the process.
His wife often remarks that he should have been a manufacturing engineer, but for Malcolm, working with wood has always been the perfect fit.
“True craftsmanship is being part of the creative process from design to material selection to pleasure in the finished form.”
