Karen Gelbard

Karen Gelbard

Handweaver/Designer

Karen Gelbard begins her creative process by focusing on color when crafting her distinctive handwoven jackets, coats, and scarves. Inspired by the Pacific Northwest, she designs color palettes with the eye of a painter, using her background in music to create harmonious blends. Each piece is woven on a fly-shuttle loom, bringing her vision to life.

Once the fabric is complete, she carefully lays it out on an eight-foot cutting table, cutting pattern pieces that highlight the unique qualities of her handwoven textiles. She embraces the fabric’s natural characteristics, allowing the maker’s touch to shine through. Additional techniques such as quilting, edging, or pintucks enhance each garment’s individuality.

Karen pays meticulous attention to finishing details, ensuring each piece is made to last. She calls them her “Forever Coats”—timeless, beautifully crafted garments woven with care and designed for a lifetime of wear.
